Hekani Jakhalu becomes the first woman MLA in Nagaland after winning by a margin of 1536 votes for the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party in Dimapur-III constituency. She was one of the four candidates who contested the Nagaland assembly elections this year.
In the battle for 60 seats, exit polls predict the BJP will comfortably cross the majority line, winning 42 seats along with its coalition partner, the National Democratic Progressive Party. Given the state of the opposition in Nagaland, the ruling coalition was way ahead of the race and the polls seem to be on the same track, giving the Congress only 1 seat and the FNM (formerly a formidable force) 6 seats.
However, there are five constituencies to watch out for as the votes are counted: North Angami-I, where Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio is running; Tyui, which is the stronghold of Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton; Phek, which is considered an FNM stronghold; Atoizu, where the only BJP candidate, Kahuli Sema, is contesting from; and Dimapur III.
